Igloofest Calling with Paul Kalkbrenner [Review]

19 January 2016

You know 2016 will be good when halfway through the first month of the year, one of the most famous DJ from Berlin visits your town. We’re talking here about none other than Paul Kalkbrenner.

After a huge opening night with Bonobo, Igloofest’s didn’t allow their fans to take the night off by welcoming Mr. Kalkbrenner. The man himself started his 2016 tour in North America with two nights in Mexico including a gig at the BPM Festival on January 9th. It is then after enjoying a hot festival on the beach of Playa Del Carmen, that Paul got a taste from Montreal’s Igloofest, another festival bordering the water, but with 40 degrees missing.

To warm everything up before his arrival on stage, Alicia Hush and Kim Ann Foxman took gladly care of doing so on the Sapporo stage, while the Videotron mobile stage was already on fire thanks to Lexis & Dr Love. As the excitement kept rising, the wait was finally over at 10:30 when Paul Kalkbrenner arrived on stage with a slight tan he probably brought back from Mexico and a beautiful Canadiens jersey that we assume he got it from here!

Paul smoothly started his set on a melodic note and we didn’t have to wait too long to hear his techno drops. We quickly realized, just as we hoped, that his set was going to be a mix of his new album and his famous Berlin Calling one. Paul Kalkbrenner is pretty much well-known for his ingenious production skills, and his live performance on Friday was all about it!

Thanks to Igloofest for bringing back Kalkbrenner, more than five years after his magical presence at Piknic Electronik in 2010. Hope to see him again soon in Montreal, under the sun or under the snow!
