Do Not Sleep takes on ADE: An interview with Nick Curly

13 October 2016

Amsterdam awaits! Nick Curly is all set to accompany the likes of Alan Fitzpatrick, Anje Schneider, Josh Butler, Matt Tolfrey and Darius Syrossian for the Do Not Sleep ADE special in collaboration with Click and Labyrinth. The 8bit man has had a stellar year to date with releases on the likes of Knee Deep In Sound, Second State and, of couse, 8bit. We couldn’t resist a few questions ahead of what’s yet another big moment for the Mannheim producer in 2016.

WWD: Cheers for joining us Nick! What’s been going on in your world this week?

Cheers mate. Just got on holiday with the family this week. Took a weekend off next week and plan on getting fully recovered from touring the last month.

WWD: Running a label, throwing parties, and going on tour as an individual must be very difficult to stay on top of, can you share any important techniques you use to manage your time?

As you already said, maybe the most important thing is to manage your time. I need to make sure that I produce music, and get label stuff done even when I’m touring a lot. On 8Bit and Trust I have great partners who help me a lot for sure. I Couldn’t handle that all on my own.

WWD: What’s going on at 8bit Records right now? where’s the focus of the label currently?

I’m very happy with 8Bit at the moment, we focus on releasing good Tech House and have just planned new releases from Sidney Charles, Mihalis Safras, Gorge and myself.

WWD: You’ve been highly productive in recent months with release on the likes of Knee Deep In Sound, Second State and, of couse, 8bit. What’s been driving that productivity?

I love doing music, and I just wanna get all these ideas out that I have in mind. When I’m traveling and listen to other DJs sets, I always get new Ideas which I’m trying to write down in the studio when I got home. On Knee Deep I had the first collab with my younger brother Steffen Deux. That was a special release for me.

WWD: You’re off to play Do Not Sleep at ADE very soon. is ADE an integral part of the annual calender for you?

Of course. ADE is probably the most important Dance Event in Europe now. Specially for agents and promoters it’s a good place to meet and confirm line ups. For sure the parties around are also special, and that why I can’t wait to play at the DNS Event during ADE. Specially as it’s the first gig after my holidays.

WWD: In terms of the party business, what do you think is the key to a longevity for a brand like Do Not Sleep?

I think to have a Ibiza residency like DNS already has, is a good key for the longevity of a brand. Also working with the right acts is important. DNS line ups have been great over the summer and I think we can definitely expect more from this brand.

WWD: Before we let you go! What else can we expect from you music-wise for the rest of 2016?

I just released my “Helter Skelter” Ep this week on Adam Beyers Truesoul imprint, another big thing is that I have remixed a upcoming release from John Creamer & Stephane K on Stereo Recordings. For December I’ve got another EP planned to come out on my own 8Bit Label.
