Presenting their second release of the year, EDGE welcomes Sebastian Sellares to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from one of Argentina’s most talent-rich regions in Cordoba, Sebastian Sellares quickly established himself within the country’s underground music scene, producing a mesmerizing brand of progressive house that caught the attention of the genre’s fans and tastemakers. UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers, Cid Inc’s Replug Records, and GMJ and Matter’s Meanwhile have all served as landing spots for the Argentine’s beloved sound, while world class DJs Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Guy J have been steadfast supporters along the way. Choosey in his projects of late, Sebastian capped off 2023 with his latest Anjunadeep vehicle ‘Lullaby of the Seraphim,’ a three-track affair regarded by many as his most mature and emotional work to date. Now, following an EP for Meanwhile’s ‘Horizons’ affiliate, Sebastion makes his much-anticipated EDGE debut with ‘Melomaniac.’
The EP’s title selection ‘Melomaniac’ sets the pace and lands with many of Sebastian’s beloved production hallmarks. Tight kick drums and neatly manicured percussion provide a DJ friendly intro, as meandering atmospheres set a glowing backdrop for the bassline to deliver a rush of free-flowing energy. Cruising effortlessly across the first act, it’s a set of emotive chord changes which adds further depth and warmth, a vibe which is sure to cast a heartfelt mood over the dance floor. Sebastian’s elusive vision shines during the main break, as he maintains a sense of restraint and beauty that astute progressive house fans will appreciate, before smoothly shifting gears into a gorgeous final act.
‘Maelstrom’ finds Sebastian showcasing a deeper side of his repertoire. Once again created with a tasteful sense of emotion, it’s a free-flowing exchange of fluttery motifs and clustered synth mutations which provide an enduring main theme, while a wonderfully windswept break carefully elevates mood, all while maintaining an underlying ambience for an incandescent finale.
Rounding out the release are the driving qualities of ‘Fugue State,’ a track where the Cordoba resident aims squarely at a peak hour dancefloor. Marrying the classic and contemporary sounds of the genre, Sebastian crafts an aesthetic that is groovy, haunting and effortlessly cool, one that balances a loud-soft dynamic perfectly. Holographic synths flash through a whirlwind of rebounding rhythms and coral monochromes across a smooth first movement, as mood and tension continue to rise during the interlude, before reverent textures meet highly explosive beats and swing heavy basslines for a thunderous finale. A fitting conclusion to a unique look into Sebastian’s repertoire, and the dreamy progressive sound from which he has built his career on.
