Norwegian artist Sommerfeldt arrives at a major milestone with his debut full-length album, ‘Melodi’, and we are delighted to premiere ‘Owe You’, a standout cut that features the captivating voice of Embla Maria.
‘Owe You’ glides on a warm, deep house groove, built on the kind of tight drum machine foundation that has become a signature of Sommerfeldt’s productions. Embla Maria’s vocal floats over the top with an ethereal, emotive quality that gives the track its heart, balancing the hypnotic rhythm with something tender and human. It is a record that feels equally at home on a late night dancefloor and in headphones on the long walk back home.
The track is lifted from ‘Melodi’, a six track collection that takes listeners on a journey through Sommerfeldt’s mind, inspirations, experiences and travels. Four years in the making, the album was pieced together from recordings captured around the world on hardware samplers and synths, with bird sounds and ocean waves processed and finalised in his studio in Grünerløkka, Oslo. The result is a colourful, genre fluid body of work that touches on ambient, 80s textures, new wave, deep house, balearic and the downpitched progressive trance of the early millennium that Sommerfeldt highlights as his formative years. Joining him across the album is a stellar cast of contributors, including Embla Maria, Sigmund Floyd, Toshybot, Guro Kverndokk, Kristian Solhaug and Magnus JJ, alongside original cover artwork by Quentin Desveaux. ‘Melodi’ lands as a bold orange 12 inch with a digital edition to follow.
With more than 20 years of experience as a producer and DJ, and a catalogue that spans labels such as Full Pupp, Paper Recordings and his home Badabing Diskos, Sommerfeldt is one of the most respected figures in the Oslo scene. Badabing Diskos, the Oslo collective, label and club night run by Vinny Villbass, has spent over a decade championing feel good, organic house and disco from the Norwegian capital, and ‘Melodi’ sits perfectly within that warm, forward thinking world.
