‘The Cube’ is Paul James Nolan at his most immersive. More than a livestream, it is a fully realised audiovisual journey, a set designed to dissolve the line between listener and space and to pull the viewer into a single, hypnotic frame. Streamed as one continuous piece, it captures the intention that runs through all of Paul’s work, treating the night as a transformative arc rather than a simple playlist.

Much of the visual language comes from the Shipibo, the Indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon whose relationship with ayahuasca stretches back generations. Their intricate geometric patterns, known as kené, are understood as visual expressions of the healing songs sung in ceremony, a way of seeing sound. Woven through ‘The Cube’, those shifting, symmetrical forms give the music a second body, turning the screen into something closer to a meditation than a music video.

Musically, the journey is deep and patient. Paul lets each record breathe, moving through warm, melodic house, rolling progressive and darker, trance tinged moments without ever breaking the spell. It is sound design with a pulse, a careful interplay of shadow and light that rewards full attention and asks the viewer to drop in rather than dip in.

That instinct for holding a room was forged in the world of high end audio engineering, where Paul worked alongside the likes of Sasha and Junkie XL. Today it powers everything from his releases on Bedrock and UV to MYT, his platform for artist development, and his consultancy work with d&b audiotechnik on spatial audio. Having recently relocated from Liverpool to Buenos Aires, inspired by the vast landscapes of the Argentine salt deserts, he continues to chase music that bypasses the analytical mind, and ‘The Cube’ is one of its most complete expressions yet.
