Dirtybird has always had a soft spot for records with a bit of attitude, and ‘Grab The Wall’ turns up with plenty of it. The new single reunites Kevin Knapp and Audiojack, two acts who have quietly become pillars of the flock, and finds them leaning into the saucier corner of their shared sound.
The groove does the talking from the very first bar. Audiojack build the foundation out of throbbing, elastic low end and sharp percussion that keeps shifting under your feet, while Knapp’s soulful vocal carries the central hook and delivers it with a wink. Each twist and turn feels unpredictable yet lands seamlessly, and the result is playful and physical in equal measure, exactly the kind of character led record that has defined the Dirtybird sound for the better part of two decades.
Texas bred and Bay Area schooled, Kevin Knapp is a producer, vocalist and DJ whose voice has become one of the most recognisable in the label’s catalogue. His long run on Dirtybird takes in ‘Dummer Loco’ with Mat.Joe and Maximono in 2020, ‘Dope Kid Central’ in 2022 and ‘Funky Enough’ alongside Andreas Henneberg in 2023. Last year he took part in Dirtybird’s inaugural Flight Week writing camp, contributing ‘Bell Ringer’ to the Flock Tapes compilation, and performed at Dirtybird Campout x Northern Nights.
UK duo Audiojack, meanwhile, have spent two decades refining a distinctive blend of house, minimal and garage that has landed them on imprints like Defected, Toolroom, Crosstown Rebels, Nothing Else Matters and Knee Deep In Sound. They made their Dirtybird debut in 2022 with the Stay Strong EP and returned last year with the follow up single ‘Rumours’, before joining the label at Dirtybird Campout x Northern Nights this July. Their growing presence in the Dirtybird ecosystem makes this pairing feel less like a one off and more like a natural next step.
Founded in San Francisco by Claude VonStroke, Dirtybird has spent twenty years championing house and tech house with a sense of humour intact, building a roster, a festival and a whole community around music that refuses to take itself too seriously. ‘Grab The Wall’ sits right in that lineage, a track engineered for the moment the dancefloor stops thinking and starts moving.
