PFL76 bends light into hypnotic techno on Wide Shut Records

Montréal’s PFL76 is back on Wide Shut Records with ‘The Fringe’, a hypnotic techno single that takes its cue from one of the most famous experiments in modern physics. Built on minimalist soundscapes, deep rhythms, and futuristic textures, it is a record that asks you to think while making sure you never stop moving.

The concept comes from the double-slit experiment. When light passes through two narrow openings, the waves overlap and interfere with each other, creating a pattern of bright and dark bands known as interference fringes. Some waves reinforce one another, others cancel out entirely, and the final image only exists because of how those separate elements relate.

PFL76 translates that idea into sound. Pulses, frequencies, and textures constantly overlap, strengthen, and fade into one another, while the arrangement leaves plenty of open space for the track to breathe. Rather than stacking layer upon layer, ‘The Fringe’ lets silence become part of the composition, so a handful of carefully placed elements end up generating a much bigger experience. The groove stays firmly physical, rolling and steady, while the surrounding atmospheres shift with a quiet sense of uncertainty. It is cerebral and instinctive at the same time, the kind of track that makes perfect sense on paper but truly reveals itself when the lights go down and the room starts to move.

Behind the alias is a producer with more than 25 years of experience as an audio engineer, having worked in several Montréal recording studios before devoting himself to his own artistic output. That background shows in every detail: his productions pair precise sound design with hypnotic rhythms, and his minimalist visual aesthetic extends the same philosophy beyond the music itself.

Wide Shut Records is the independent imprint PFL76 co-founded with Montréal visual artist Gabey earlier this year. After ‘Clockwork’, ‘Falling For You’ and Gabey’s ‘Indulge In’, the label continues to build a catalogue where each release explores ideas around love, science, spirituality, and personal discovery. With ‘The Fringe’, science takes centre stage, and the result is one of the most focused and immersive chapters of the label’s young story so far.
