Germany’s JUNO is back on Crosstown Rebels, and this time he brings his longtime studio partner Jamek Ortega along for the ride. ‘Deep Breath’ is the title track of a new two-track EP on Damian Lazarus’ label, following JUNO’s debut on the imprint earlier this year with ‘Allo’ alongside Alex Wann, a record that was crowned Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune on BBC Radio 1 and climbed into Beatport’s Top 20. We are delighted to premiere ‘Deep Breath’ ahead of its release on October 9th.
From the very first bar, ‘Deep Breath’ pulls you into a hypnotic, percussive world. Snaking rhythms and rattling cowbells build steadily over an atmospheric backdrop while a shadowy low end keeps everything locked to the floor, before a commanding vocal rises through the haze to anchor the groove. It is a track that balances tension and release with real patience, tailor-made for those late-night moments when the whole room is moving as one. “We wanted to create something hypnotic and emotional, while keeping that energy that makes you want to move on the dancefloor,” JUNO says of the EP. “It feels like a great representation of where our sound is heading right now.”
The EP continues a partnership that has already seen the pair release together on Arodes’ Unreleased Records and Wired World, as well as sharing the booth for regular back-to-back performances. On the flip, ‘Sloppy Disk’ sees JUNO go solo, locking into a driving four-to-the-floor groove where a rolling bassline lays the foundation for pensive chords and subtle melodic flourishes, slowly expanding the atmosphere before tumbling into a sweeping, cinematic finale.
JUNO has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in melodic house, racking up close to 30 million streams on the back of hits like ‘Last Dance’ on Magnifik Music and delivering a Hot Mix for Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. Jamek Ortega, meanwhile, has built a reputation for emotive, groove-driven productions through releases on Three Six Zero, MoBlack, Abracadabra and Madorasindahouse, earning heavy support from the likes of Keinemusik, Solomun, Tiësto and Black Coffee.
Crosstown Rebels needs little introduction. Founded by Damian Lazarus in 2003, the London-born imprint has spent more than two decades at the cutting edge of underground house and techno, launching countless careers and hosting its legendary Get Lost parties around the world. With ‘Deep Breath’, JUNO and Jamek Ortega add a fresh chapter to that story and mark a major milestone in their respective trajectories.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Deep Breath’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
