With two official Balance compilations under his belt and a relationship with the label that stretches back well over a decade, Nick Warren finally makes his solo debut on Balance Music. His new EP ‘Run For Cover’ is a two-track journey into the hypnotic possibilities of progressive house, and we are proud to premiere the title track today.
‘Run For Cover’ channels the wide-eyed escapism of the mid-90s without ever slipping into nostalgia. Psychedelic details flicker across the drums like LED trails, while a restless walking bassline gives the record a wonderfully physical pull. Elements drift in and out of focus throughout, keeping an easy, heads-down momentum that feels tailor-made for long, immersive sets.
On the flip, ‘Stupa’ opens the mood outward with sun-warmed percussion and a serrated bassline that brings a distinctly Balearic feel. A woozy synth gradually pulls things into more narcotic territory, while soft vocal fragments, keyboard flourishes and flashes of guitar keep everything grounded. Patient and transportive, the EP is a fitting debut from an artist who knows exactly how little is needed to create a compelling journey.
Few names are as closely tied to the history of progressive house as Nick Warren. The Bristol DJ and producer first rose to prominence as a resident at Cream and as one half of Way Out West, before helming a long line of celebrated Global Underground mixes that helped define the sound for a generation of clubbers. More than three decades into his career, he remains a fixture in booths around the world and continues to champion deep, melodic music through his own label The Soundgarden.
Balance Music, meanwhile, has been one of electronic music’s most respected institutions for more than twenty years. Born in Australia, the iconic imprint and compilation series has welcomed mixes from heavyweights such as Joris Voorn over the years, while its EP series and events, including This Is Balance Croatia, keep pushing the deeper and more adventurous side of the dancefloor. Seeing Nick Warren step up with his first solo EP on the label feels like a long overdue homecoming.
