Few artists in electronic music can claim a stage list quite like Michael Canitrot’s. Through his Monumental Tour, the French DJ and producer has turned the Eiffel Tower, Mont-Saint-Michel, the Palais-Royal and the reopening celebrations of Notre-Dame de Paris into dancefloors, and this past summer he carried the concept across the Atlantic with Liberty Lights, a first-ever performance at the Statue of Liberty. Now he makes his debut on Purified Records with ‘Diamond’, a collaboration with classically trained mezzo-soprano, songwriter and producer Yana Mann, and we are thrilled to premiere it today on When We Dip.
‘Diamond’ sits right at the meeting point between the concert hall and the club. Orchestral strings and cinematic textures set the scene before a driving melodic techno groove takes hold, while Yana’s voice floats above it all and gives the track an otherworldly, almost sacred glow. It balances real emotional depth with proper dancefloor weight, the kind of record that feels just as at home at golden hour in front of a cathedral as it does deep into a late night set.
The pairing is far from new. Yana previously joined Michael on stage during his landmark Eiffel Tower performance, and the two have since built an established creative partnership that draws on her experience across classical and contemporary music. Born in St. Petersburg and trained at the Mariinsky Theatre’s Academy of Young Singers before settling in Dubai, Yana has sung on stages from the St. Petersburg Philharmonic to Carnegie Hall, and her move into electronic music gives Michael’s melodic approach to production a rare vocal counterpart.
Purified Records is a natural home for this one. Launched by Nora En Pure in 2019, the label has grown into a reference point for deep, melodic and nature-inspired electronic music, and Michael’s arrival extends beyond the studio, as he also joins the label for its ADE showcase in Amsterdam this year. Even the artwork follows the Purified ethos: Romania-based photographer Adi Albulescu captured the intricate textures of ice against black sand at Diamond Beach in Iceland, a fitting visual twin for the track and a nod to the coastal landscapes the label cares about preserving.
