VNTM: 5 Producers – and How They Have Influenced My Sound

Thomas Gaboury-Potvin
Interviews, Melodic Techno, News
26 September 2018

Every now and then a young producer emerges on to the scene and immediately makes you stand up and take notice. Live act VNTM is one such individual. Already earning rave reviews in his native Holland thanks to his intricate and upfront sound, the youngster looks set for a promising career in electronic music and has already repped labels such as Filth on Acid, Stil vor Talent and more. With his latest record arriving via Secret Cinema’s Gem and with ADE on the horizon, we thought it a good idea to put some questions to the main man regarding his favourite producers. Without further ado, here’s what he had to say for himself…

Tale Of Us

Their way of using harmonies is something that really inspires me when making music. Setting a very distinct mood that is recognisable throughout all of their tracks and combining that with pounding and abstract grooves. Also besides doing their melodic techno sound, they released a classical influenced album without club beats called “Endless”. I had that album on repeat for months because it was something that drew my attention away from club music and opened up more freedom when writing my own music

Recondite

I find Recondite to be very inspirational for my music because his tracks contain only a few drums and they are mostly driven by his dark basses and chords. He shows that writing a good techno record that has the ability to take people on a journey doesn’t have to be very energetic. I did a bootleg remix of his track called Warg, and that still is one of my go to tracks in every set because it works so well on the dancefloors!

Wehbba

Wehbba is someone I admire for his technical skills, in a recent video for Future-Music he explained every little detail of his production work. When I don’t have inspiration to make music I love watching tutorials or other videos from producers explaining their craft. And his focus on every detail really caught my attention and made me look more attentively at my own work.

Olafur Arnalds/Kiasmos

Olafur Arnalds, who is also part of Kiasmos, is someone I really look up to because of his natural way of making music. In this video he plays together with Nils Frahm, and the way they improvise and work together with only a few instruments is very inspiring. They compose a mini-album right there on the spot by letting inspiration flow and not looking too much to the production side of things.

Woo York

So far Woo York is the only act of this list that I have shared the stage with, last March I played before them in Amsterdam. To me their sound can be best described as groovy and very energetic but still minimalistic dark techno. They have built a big rig of livegear for their sets, and it’s inspiring to see them work together without even talking to each other for 1,5hrs. No communication, just flowing on the energy in their music and knowing exactly what to play where and when in their set.

Keep up with VNTM on Facebook , Soundcloud, Instagram, Twitter and Resident Advisor

VNTM’s ‘Enigma’ EP is out 28/09 on Secret Cinema’s Gem Records. Buy/listen to the release here
