Review: NYC’s best Masters At Work deliver the groove-led-house ‘Mattel’

The word legendary gets bandied about pretty loosely in today’s music sphere. It’s become a cliche, overused and often unrepresentative. But on this occasion, we deem it to be wholeheartedly valid as Masters At Work have just released their first single in twenty years.

Released on MAW Records last week, the eight-minute cut is a sprightly house number, that takes its name from the boys favourite drum machine in their formative years. The percussion solo comes from Kenny Dope (who played it live in the studio), whilst Louie Vega provides the overarching bassline with plenty of drum-driven groove felt right from the get-go.

To coincide with the release, the pair have also made the full back catalogue of MAW Records available in digital format. Featuring re-mastered versions and previously unreleased mixes, Mattel kicks off their 2021 release schedule and sets the tone for a busy year ahead, with several new EPs already in the pipeline.

To say we’re excited would be an understatement! We’ve got the first Masters At Work track in two decades and are soon-to-be-treated to re-mastered versions of some of the label’s most-iconic releases, including Voices In My Mind and Bangin Early Theme.

So Kenny and Louie – thanks for being back in action!

Masters At Work – Mattel is available to purchase via Traxsource.
