There are producers who chase whatever the dancefloor is doing this month, and there are producers who simply keep sharpening the same blade until nobody else can touch it. Cristoph has always belonged firmly to the second group, and ‘Elements’ is another reminder of how much power he can wring out of very few moving parts. The track rides on a deep, rolling low end and a percussion pattern that keeps shifting just enough to stay hypnotic, while the atmosphere above it widens bar after bar until the whole thing feels enormous. It is peak time progressive house in the sense that matters most: patient, physical, and built for a room that is already locked in.
‘Elements’ arrives as the title track of ALLEY368, a package that also gathers reworks from Mike Rish and from the pairing of Maze 28 and Ricky Ryan, three producers who know the label’s dancefloor language inside out and who each pull the original into a different corner of the night.
Cristoph needs little introduction at this point. The Newcastle native came up through Knee Deep in Sound, caught the ear of Eric Prydz and landed on Pryda Presents, then went on to release for Anjunadeep, Bedrock and Last Night on Earth, while his collaboration with CamelPhat on ‘Breathe’ carried him far beyond the club circuit. A BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, a full season residency at Hï Ibiza and main stage slots at Tomorrowland, Ultra and Creamfields followed, and these days he also steers his own Consequence of Society imprint and radio show. All of that mileage is audible here, because ‘Elements’ is the work of someone who knows exactly when to hold back.
Mango Alley, meanwhile, has been quietly assembling one of the most consistent catalogues in progressive music since Alex Mango founded the label in 2008. Immaculate sound design, long form arrangements and a roster that stretches from The Wash, Maze 28 and Ruben Karapetyan to Hobin Rude and Dowden have made it a reliable stop for anyone who likes their house music with depth and detail, and its sister imprint Maldesoule pushes further into deeper and more experimental territory. Landing a Cristoph original is a statement of intent, and ALLEY368 sits right in the middle of everything the label does well.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Elements’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
