Mafikizolo was a South African trio, later a duo, that were regulars on MAW Records in the early 2000s. They also released some genre-defining albums on Columbia and Universal, but ‘Loot’ remains their high watermark.
Says Louie Vega about the record: “We’re really excited about this release. This tune we picked up on our early visits to Johannesburg back in 1999, we’ve been going there ever since! It’s a classic amongst MAW fans and has been played all over the world. We were the first who introduced B.O.P. and Mafikizolo through Maw Records to the world on the club scene (late 90’s – 2000) with this release and a few others. Jaden has done an outstanding job, and we (Masters At Work) gave it our thang! Here’s to another life for this classic club jam.”
First to remix is the legendary Masters at Work duo of Kenny Dope and Louie Vega, who shaped the ’90s house sound with their almost endless stream of irresistibly deep and soulful gems. Their version layers in plenty of their signature drum loops while retaining the Afro vocal charm of the original and adding wispy synth details full of spiritual energy. The pair also offers up another of their gold-standard dubs, featuring rousing drum patterns and cosmic synth lines that add a late-night twist, as well as a sophisticated instrumental that unfolds with majestic soul over more than eight minutes.
Jaden Thompson is one of the most in-demand young talents in the house scene. The fabric London resident has played everywhere from Circo Loco in Ibiza to Space Miami and has a sound built on Chicago house foundations, but with a forward-thinking edge. It has appeared on labels like Classic Music Company and Cuttin’ Headz. He taps into the tribal energy of the original, with organic percussion peppering the potent drums and expressive vocal wails ensuring a fiery atmosphere. It’s stripped back and driving but full of summery flavour that will get big reactions in the club.
