Although Phonique was the founder of Zatar Music in 2022, there are many more people behind the label. On the administrative side, Phonique teamed up with long-time partners SEN Music, a company which is dedicated to electronic music for more than 28 years being behind labels like Poker Flat, Dessous, Trentemøller’s In My Room or Acid Pauli’s Ouie to name just a few.

But more important, are Phonique’s musical partners like Fairplay from Jordan, Bakka from Brazil, and Nilu from Copenhagen. It is about a mutual vision and longtime friendship that made Zatar Music possible. With this in mind, Zatar formed its own musical genre, which can be described as a mix of Afro Arabic House or Middle Eastern Melodic House.

Due to Phonique being in the business for more than 2 decades, the label and its idea caught the attention of many colleagues and DJ friends, who were excited to contribute their own tracks or remixes to the label, so the artist list on Zatar includes big names like Korolova, Gui Boratto, Cioz, Hyenah, Spada, Gorje Hewek, Stereo Express, Niconé, YAME, Floyd Lavine, Mason, Namito, and Johannes Albert.

The Zatar tracks made it to top positions in the Beatport and Traxsource genre charts, into Black Coffee’s Spotify playlist and also into Adriatique’s Cercle Set, where over 7 million people already listened to the Spada remix for Fairplay’s iconic ‘Latlal’ performed in front of Egypt’s Hatshepsut temple.

For this week’s episode of Select Cuts, Berlin-based powerhouse, Phonique, takes us on a slow-burning showcase of Zatar Music’s deep, hypnotic side. Enjoy!
