Melody Of the Soul returns with the fourth chapter of its Soul Sampler series, and ‘Soul Sampler IV’ works once again as a snapshot of where the label currently stands. The compilation gathers a broad cast of producers around one shared sensibility, favouring patient arrangements, warm low end and melodies that reveal themselves slowly rather than all at once. Sitting among the highlights is ‘Sharp Hook’, a collaboration between Mateo Tapia and Carlos Gatto that brings two different generations of the Buenos Aires scene into the same room.

‘Sharp Hook’ opens on a rolling organic groove, the kind that feels handmade rather than programmed, with dusty percussion and a bassline that keeps nudging the arrangement forward. From there the pair layer in a hypnotic lead motif that gives the title its meaning: a short, insistent phrase that lodges itself in your head and keeps coming back dressed slightly differently each time. The breakdown pulls the drums away and lets the pads and reverb carry the weight before everything locks back into place, and that restraint is exactly what makes the return land. It is a record built for the deep stretch of a set, the moment when the floor is already committed and the DJ can afford to take their time.

Mateo Tapia is originally from San Juan and now based in Buenos Aires, where he has become one of the more talked about names in the Argentinian melodic circuit. Trained at the Arjaus school, he works in a deep and immersive register that leans on hypnotic grooves, emotional atmospheres and a sense of narrative, and his productions have landed on RKP, Clubsonica and Melody Of the Soul, with upcoming releases lined up on Manual Music, Plaisirs Sonores Records and Or Two Strangers. His music has been picked up by Hernán Cattáneo on Resident #753 and #795, while Nick Warren has played ‘Reflections’ at My Tribe in Punta del Este and ‘Nightfall’ at The Soundgarden in Mar del Plata. Further support from Hicky & Kalo, Antrim, John Digweed, Gai Barone, Ezequiel Arias and DJ Ruby has followed, alongside a steady run of dates across Córdoba, Puerto Madryn and Pergamino.

Carlos Gatto arrives from a much longer runway. He started playing in the 1990s, touring clubs around Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina with Depeche Mode, New Order and The Shamen in his DNA, and he spent the 2000s holding residencies at BsAs News, Pacha, Opera Bay and Terrazas del Este. Since 2010 his focus has shifted increasingly toward production, with originals and remixes on Soundteller Records and AH Digital earning support from Hernán Cattáneo, Kamilo Sanclemente, John Digweed, Nick Warren and Danny Tenaglia. He also performs a live format built around synthesizers alongside bands and musicians, and teaches production and DJ courses at Arjaus Academy, which happens to be where his path and Tapia’s overlap.

Melody Of the Soul has spent the past few years carving out a dependable home for organic and progressive house, and the Soul Sampler series is where that identity reads clearest. Rather than chasing one sound, the label uses these compilations to place established names next to newer ones and lets the mood do the connective work. ‘Sharp Hook’ sits right at the centre of that idea.

You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Sharp Hook’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
