To celebrate her upcoming EP on Sasha’s label Last Night On Earth, Qrion steps up for the 195th edition of our When We Dip Main Mix series. Drifting in from ambient textures and broken beats before settling into rolling, emotive melodic house, the mix features music from Burial and Four Tet, Ilan Bluestone and Spencer Brown, Anthony Pappa and Barker, alongside a run of her own productions including both tracks from the new EP, ‘Arp Check’ and ‘Khaeng Party’, plus collaborations with Because of Art, Black 08 and Massane.
Born and raised in Sapporo, Japan, and now based in Austin, Texas, Qrion explores a broad musical realm, from soft rhythms and soul sampling grooves through to driving melodic house. Driven by emotion and life experiences, she communicates her thoughts and feelings through melodies rather than words. Named in Forbes Japan’s 30 Under 30 and supported by BBC Radio 1 hosts Danny Howard and Pete Tong, as well as DJs such as Mall Grab, Todd Edwards and Lane 8, she has firmly established herself as a key figure in house music.
After several releases on Last Night On Earth, Qrion returns to the label with ‘Arp Check’, out October 30th. The title track opens the EP as an emblem of her style, with distinctive melodic keys flooding the intro before a hypnotic rhythm track blooms into a symphony of synths, pads, rolling drums and drifting vocals with a progressive flair. On the flip, ‘Khaeng Party’ pairs old-school chopped vocals and dubbed-out bass with luminous chords and soulful piano keys, creating an unflinching house groove that showcases her versatility. In her own words, these are tracks she would personally want to play loud in a club.
You can now listen to the full mix of ‘Qrion’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
